Beyond the Gridiron: How Michael Penix Jr. and Kyle Pitts Forge a Winning Bond on and off the Field

Discover how Michael Penix Jr. and Kyle Pitts are building a strong connection both on the field and on the golf course, enhancing their chemistry for the Atlanta Falcons.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons are witnessing the emergence of a dynamic duo that extends beyond the football field. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and tight end Kyle Pitts have been developing a unique bond that could significantly impact the team's performance in the upcoming NFL season.

A Connection That Transcends Football

Penix and Pitts have been spending considerable time together off the field, particularly on the golf course. This shared interest has not only strengthened their personal relationship but also their on-field chemistry. Pitts, an avid golfer, has been mentoring Penix, who is relatively new to the sport. Their early morning golf sessions often include kicker Younghoe Koo and a few other teammates, providing a relaxed environment away from the pressures of football.

"Most of the time we go out early, so it's just me, him, and [kicker Younghoe] Koo, and maybe a couple of other guys, where it's just us out there and we're just playing fast and just enjoying the time," Pitts said. "Just like how you say, not thinking about football. So that's a big thing for us, just hearing the birds chirp and playing music and talking about everything but football."

On-Field Chemistry

The bond between Penix and Pitts has already shown promise on the field. In the final three games of the 2024 season, Penix started and connected with Pitts on several key plays. One notable moment was a fourth-down touchdown pass to Pitts in the end zone against the Washington Commanders in Week 17, which tied the game and sent it into overtime. Although the Falcons ultimately lost, it was a glimpse of the potential synergy between the two players.

Pitts, entering his fifth season, has had six different quarterbacks throwing to him since his Pro Bowl rookie season in 2021. The prospect of developing a long-term rapport with Penix is something Pitts is keen on. He has been studying legendary quarterback-tight end duos like Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, as well as Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez, aiming to replicate their success.

"Just being younger, I like to just watch older people, so seeing Travis [Kelce] and Patrick [Mahomes], seeing when Matt [Ryan] was here, Matt and Tony [Gonzalez]," Pitts said. "Just all of the great quarterbacks who were successful had a great relationship with their tight end. So, just seeing that and learning from other guys, that's something I kind of authentically wanted to grow with him, and it's pretty cool."

Golf as a Bonding Tool

Penix has embraced golf as a way to connect with his teammates, particularly Pitts. Despite a rocky start, Penix has shown significant improvement and even purchased new clubs. His lefty swing, capable of driving the ball over 325 yards, has impressed his teammates.

"Honestly, he just started and he's got something that you can't teach, which is speed," Koo said. "He hits the ball farther than anybody I've seen. ... [his] ceiling is very high."

Penix acknowledges the importance of this off-field bonding in enhancing their on-field performance. "I feel like our connection is great, not just what we've been doing so far on the field, but off the field as well because of that," Penix said. "And each and every day, even when we're golfing, we talk football, too, every now and then. Just talking about different plays, different routes and stuff like that. So I feel like that time away from football, we still kind of in that mindset like, OK, yeah, we out here having fun golfing, but we know what's the real thing we need to work on and make sure we continue to get better at each and every day and we've been doing a great job with it."

Coaches' Perspectives

Falcons passing game coordinator TJ Yates, a former NFL quarterback, has also joined Penix and Pitts on the golf course. While he humorously noted that both are "terrible golfers," he emphasized the positive impact of their growing relationship.

"The better relationship they can have off the field is only going to make it better on the field, and it's began to grow and grow and grow this entire offseason into this camp and everything," Yates said.

Head coach Raheem Morris views golf as a valuable tool for Penix to maintain his competitive edge. "I didn't even realize until he got up and he was talking about he threw the ball to [Pitts] the other day to [the media] -- and that's important to him," Morris said. "And those are things that are really important."

As the Falcons gear up for the 2025 season, the evolving connection between Michael Penix Jr. and Kyle Pitts could be a key factor in their quest for success. Their shared experiences on the golf course are laying the foundation for what could become one of the most formidable quarterback-tight end duos in the NFL.
