Wigan Athletic Oust Manager Shaun Maloney Following Defeat to Reading

Wigan Athletic has dismissed manager Shaun Maloney after a defeat to Reading, marking a pivotal moment in the club's season.

Wigan Athletic has made the tough decision to relieve manager Shaun Maloney of his duties following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Reading. This defeat marks the continuation of a challenging period for the club, which has secured only one win in their last seven matches, leaving them precariously placed 15th in League One, just six points above the relegation zone.

Maloney, a revered figure in Wigan's history for his role in the 2013 FA Cup victory, had been at the helm for over two years during a tumultuous time for the club. Despite his efforts, including navigating the team through a relegation from the Championship and a points deduction last season, the current campaign has been underwhelming.

The club's statement highlighted 'disappointing' home performances as a key factor in the decision, which also sees the departure of his assistant, Max Rogers. Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Glenn Whelan, along with Graham Barrow and Frankie Bunn, will take on interim leadership roles.

Maloney's tenure, though challenging, was not without its moments of resilience. He was commended for his handling of off-field issues, including delayed payments to players and staff, and a points deduction. Following the club's takeover by Mike Danson, Maloney led Wigan to a 12th-place finish in League One. However, this season's aspirations for a playoff push have not materialized, with the team consistently outside the top half and struggling with the lowest goal tally in the division.

As Wigan Athletic looks to the future, the search for a new manager begins, with hopes of revitalizing the team's fortunes and stabilizing its position in League One.
