Cricket Coaching Controversy: Jason Gillespie Slams Aaqib Javed as a 'Clown'

Former Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie labels successor Aaqib Javed a 'clown' amidst coaching controversies and Pakistan's poor cricket performance.

Former Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie has launched a scathing attack on his successor Aaqib Javed, calling him a "clown" and accusing him of undermining both Gillespie and former white-ball coach Gary Kirsten to secure his position. Gillespie and Kirsten were appointed in April 2024 but both resigned by the year's end, with Aaqib taking over their roles.

Gillespie's comments came in response to a social media post where Aaqib attributed Pakistan's recent poor form to frequent changes in selectors and coaches. "We changed 16 coaches in the last two-and-a-half years and 26 selectors," Aaqib stated. "If you do this to any team in the world, their performance would be the same."

Reacting sharply, Gillespie said on social media: "This is hilarious. Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and I behind the scenes, campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown."

Kirsten, the former South Africa batter, spent just six months as white-ball head coach before resigning in October. Gillespie, the former Australia fast bowler, temporarily took charge during the white-ball tour of Australia, winning the one-day series but losing the T20 series. Aaqib subsequently took permanent charge.

Gillespie, who had signed a two-year deal with the Pakistan Cricket Board in April 2024, resigned as Test head coach in December. His resignation followed his removal from Pakistan's selection panel during the Test series against England.

Pakistan's disappointing performance, including an early exit from the Champions Trophy without a win, has raised questions about the stability and effectiveness of the team's management. The ongoing controversy highlights the challenges faced by Pakistan cricket in maintaining consistent leadership and performance.
