Elina Svitolina's Inspiring Journey: Massive US Support Amidst Ukrainian Crisis

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has expressed her gratitude for the 'massive support' she has received from the US public during her recent run to the Indian Wells quarter-finals. Amidst the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Svitolina and her compatriot Marta Kostyuk have found solace in the overwhelming encouragement from fans and fellow players alike.

A Wave of Support

Svitolina, 30, highlighted the emotional impact of the support she has received: 'Since that meeting in the Oval Office, I got a lot of messages of support from the American people, just giving the love and support to Ukrainians for people back at home.' She added, 'The massive support I have got considering I played three American girls back to back - yeah, it's amazing.'

On-Court Triumphs

Despite the challenges, Svitolina continues to shine on the court. She recently defeated American fourth seed Jessica Pegula in a grueling match that lasted over five hours, including a near three-hour rain delay. The final score was 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, propelling her into the last eight at Indian Wells.

Marta Kostyuk's Experience

Marta Kostyuk, 22, who reached the last 16 before losing to Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, also shared her positive experiences. 'I got a lot of messages and a lot of apologies, which was amazing to receive because you never know how people deal with certain situations and how they react,' she said. 'I'm very thankful for all these people who keep supporting.'

A Community United

The outpouring of support has not gone unnoticed. Kostyuk recounted interactions with local drivers who expressed their sympathy upon learning she was from Ukraine. 'You are with drivers in the car and they ask you where are you from and whenever you say Ukraine everyone's like, 'Oh my God, we are so sorry.' I haven't received any negativity from people here so it feels good.'

Balancing Act

For Svitolina, the balance between her professional career and personal concerns remains a challenge. 'I feel like I need to play well, it's something that I try to do for my country. I'm checking the news still every day, there is time for that and there is time also for tennis,' she said. 'It's been a very long time that there is only bad news coming from Ukraine.'

Looking Ahead

As the tournament progresses, both Svitolina and Kostyuk remain focused on their goals, drawing strength from the support they have received. Their journey is a testament to the resilience and unity that sports can foster, even in the face of adversity.
