How Argentina Tests Shape the Future of England Rugby - Insights from Ben Curry

Ben Curry discusses the pivotal role of Argentina Tests in developing England's young rugby talents and shaping their future in international rugby.

Ben Curry, a seasoned flanker for England, believes that the upcoming summer tour to Argentina could be a defining moment for the next generation of England rugby players. Reflecting on his own experience as an 18-year-old during England's last visit to Argentina in 2017, Curry highlights the unique challenges and growth opportunities that such tours present.

The Impact of Argentina Tours

Curry recalls the intense atmosphere of the 2017 matches, noting the stark differences from any rugby environment he had previously encountered. "There was barbed wire around the stadium, a moat," he shared on Radio 5 Live. "It was a completely different atmosphere to anything I had ever seen. Especially for some of the younger players who haven't done it before, it makes you grow up."

Opportunities for Young Players

This year's series against the Pumas coincides with the British and Irish Lions tour, which opens up valuable opportunities for younger players to prove their worth and secure spots in the senior England team. Players like Gloucester prop Afolabi Fasogbon, who was part of the England under-20 side that won the age-grade world title last summer, are already being integrated into the training camps.

Argentina's Rugby Prowess

Argentina, currently ranked above England in the world standings, has demonstrated formidable strength on their home turf, having defeated top-tier teams like France, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia over the past year. The matches will be held at the Estadio Uno in Buenos Aires and at a high-altitude location in San Juan, presenting additional challenges for the England team.

Curry's Leadership Role

Now 27 and having captained his club side Sale this season, Curry anticipates taking on a more significant leadership role during this tour. "I am no longer the most nervous person in the room which is quite nice!" he joked. "It has come round full circle. I am not that old, but in terms of this group I will probably have to step up a bit with us missing a few people."

Supporting Leicester in the Premiership Final

Curry also shared his support for Leicester in the upcoming Premiership final against Bath, expressing his desire to see the Tigers triumph. "I need to find my Leicester shirt," he said. "I'd love Leicester to win it. I think anyone who's not a Bath fan will want Leicester to win it to be honest."

This tour not only tests the mettle of England's emerging talents but also sets the stage for their development into future rugby stars.
