Welsh Rugby Revival: Aaron Wainwright's Call to End Losing Streak in Japan

Aaron Wainwright emphasizes the importance of ending Wales' losing streak in Japan, aiming to restore pride in Welsh rugby.

Back row Aaron Wainwright has expressed that Welsh fans deserve to see the national team end their prolonged losing streak by securing victories in both Tests against Japan this month. Wales is currently on a record 17-Test losing sequence, dating back to October 2023. This summer tour marks a crucial opportunity for Matt Sherratt's side to turn the tide against Eddie Jones' Japan.

The Current State of Welsh Rugby

Wales' recent performance has seen them drop to 12th in the world rankings, just one place above Japan. The team has faced a series of defeats, including a second successive Six Nations clean sweep. This dismal run has left fans and players alike yearning for a change in fortune.

Wainwright's Perspective

"It's massive," said Wainwright. "The Welsh public deserve it. All the Welsh fans that are going to be out here and back home deserve it. Our minds are fully set on bringing home not just one, but two wins from this tour. We want to bring that pride back to Welsh rugby fans and public."

The Challenge Ahead

The first Test will be held at the Mikuni World Stadium in Kitakyushu on Saturday, 5 July, with the series concluding in Kobe a week later. Wainwright, who has played 57 internationals for Wales, is also hoping to gain an elusive victory after a barren season with both club and country.

Personal Struggles and Hopes

The 27-year-old has played 13 games for Dragons and a further seven internationals for Wales during the 2024-25 season, with just one victory in those 20 matches. "Going so long without a win, being able to put an end to that this weekend is something that we're all aiming for," said Wainwright. "As a collective, we're hoping that's the outcome."

Historical Context

Wainwright is one of four survivors from the previous Wales squad to play in Japan, alongside Nicky Smith, Elliot Dee, and Josh Adams, who were also in the 2019 World Cup squad. This experience could prove invaluable as Wales seeks to reclaim their former glory.

Conclusion

The upcoming Tests against Japan are more than just matches; they are a chance for Wales to reset their course and bring pride back to their passionate fan base. With the support of their fans and the determination of players like Wainwright, Wales aims to end their losing streak and start a new chapter in their rugby history.
