Rugby Australia and the British and Irish Lions are at odds over the eligibility of Wallaby number eight Pete Samu for the upcoming match against the First Nations and Pasifika XV. Samu, who recently moved to the New South Wales Waratahs after a successful stint with Bordeaux, was initially named in the squad but has been withdrawn due to not meeting the tour agreement criteria.

The Controversial Decision

According to Lions sources, the tour agreement stipulates that all players representing the First Nations and Pasifika XV must have played Super Rugby in 2025. This clause has led to Samu's exclusion, despite his impressive track record, including 33 caps for Australia and a Champions Cup victory with Bordeaux.

Reactions from Both Sides

"We had naturally hoped he would be playing in this fixture," said a Rugby Australia spokesperson. Meanwhile, First Nations and Pasifika XV coach Toutai Kefu expressed his bewilderment: "I still can't believe that they would do it, complain about it. I suppose it is what it is, but it's extra motivation for our boys."

Lions' Perspective

Lions assistant coach Johnny Sexton clarified that Samu has not been blocked but is simply ineligible under the agreed rules. "I think it's more the rules and regulations of what was agreed before the tour," Sexton stated.

Upcoming Match Preparations

The Lions are flying in Scottish players Ewan Ashman and Rory Sutherland to ensure none of the Test team have to play twice in five days. Additionally, Scotland winger Darcy Graham, Leinster prop Thomas Clarkson, England hooker Jamie George, and Leinster back Jamie Osborne have been added to the squad, swelling it from 38 to 44 players.
