Arteta Confirms Odegaard as Arsenal Captain: A Unanimous Decision
Mikel Arteta reveals Martin Odegaard was the unanimous choice for Arsenal captain, highlighting team unity and strategic vision for the upcoming season.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's manager, has emphatically stated that Martin Odegaard was the overwhelming choice among players and staff to retain the captaincy for the upcoming season. This decision comes despite criticism from club legend Tony Adams, who suggested that Declan Rice should take the armband to enhance Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
Arteta shared insights into the decision-making process, explaining that a vote was conducted to determine the captain. "I asked them to vote for the captain, and I got the result yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, which is Martin Odegaard," Arteta said. He emphasized that this unanimous decision reflects the team's confidence in Odegaard's leadership abilities.
Odegaard, who has been Arsenal's captain since 2022, has yet to lead the team to a trophy, with the Gunners finishing second in the last three league campaigns. However, Arteta remains optimistic about the team's prospects, especially with the recent signings aimed at strengthening the squad.
One of the key acquisitions is striker Viktor Gyokeres, signed for £64 million. Arteta highlighted the importance of integrating Gyokeres effectively into the team. "We're going to do everything to understand the player and expose him to the conditions where he can fulfil his incredible potential," Arteta stated. He also mentioned that midfielder Martin Zubimendi, signed for £60 million, will be fit for Arsenal's season opener against Manchester United.
Arteta's focus is on creating the right environment for the new signings to thrive, particularly Gyokeres, whose goal-scoring prowess is expected to make a significant impact. "It's for us creating the right context for Viktor to do what he does best, which is to score goals," Arteta added.
As Arsenal prepares for the new season, the team's unity and strategic signings under Arteta's leadership are key factors in their quest for silverware. The unanimous choice of Odegaard as captain underscores the collective belief in his ability to lead the team to success.
