Jonas Vingegaard Secures Vuelta a España Lead with Thrilling Stage Victory
Jonas Vingegaard claims stage two of the Vuelta a España, taking the red jersey and marking his first World Tour win in over a year.

Jonas Vingegaard has made a triumphant return to the top of the cycling world by winning stage two of the Vuelta a España and seizing the red jersey. This victory marks his first World Tour win in more than a year, edging out Giulio Ciccone in a thrilling sprint finish in Limone, Italy.
The Climactic Finish
The stage featured a challenging 10km climb in cool, rainy conditions, testing the endurance and skill of the riders. Vingegaard, riding for Visma–Lease a Bike, demonstrated his exceptional climbing ability by overtaking Ciccone in the final stretch. The Dane’s victory was by the narrowest of margins, winning by a wheel rim as they lunged for the line.
Race Dynamics
Tom Pidcock of Great Britain made a valiant effort, following Felix Gall’s attack as the misty summit approached. However, both were swept past by Vingegaard and Ciccone in the final 100 meters. Vingegaard’s win also saw him claim the red jersey from overnight leader Jasper Philipsen, who struggled in the final ascent.
Post-Race Reactions
Vingegaard expressed his joy at the victory, stating, "It's been a while since my last victory, so I'm super happy with how I felt, how the team did, and also to have the red jersey." He added, "I went on [Ciccone's] wheel and, to be honest, before the [final] corner I didn't think that it would be possible to pass him, but from the corner on it was longer to the finish than I thought so then I could pass him."
Stage Details
The 157km flat stage from Alba culminated with a climb of almost 10km with an average gradient of more than 5%. The cool, rainy conditions added to the challenge, with several riders, including Vingegaard and Pidcock, slipping on a roundabout near the bottom of the final ascent. Despite the fall, Vingegaard reported only minor bruising, stating, "I went down pretty hard, but it seems like I didn't hurt myself too bad."
Looking Ahead
On Monday, the riders face a grueling 138.5km ascent to Ceres in the Graian Alps, promising another day of intense competition. Vingegaard’s early lead sets the stage for an exciting race as the Vuelta heads into Spain.
