Tom McKibbin is taking a daring step in his golfing career by joining LIV Golf, despite the potential ramifications on his participation in traditional major tournaments and the Ryder Cup.

Having secured his place at the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Portrush—his hometown and a prestigious venue—McKibbin acknowledges that he has yet to qualify for the other three majors of the year: the Masters, US PGA Championship, and the US Open.

Reflecting on his decision, the 22-year-old golfer remarked:

"I'm not in those majors anyway at the minute, so it really didn't bother me too much."

McKibbin’s choice to join Jon Rahm's Legion XIII team in the LIV Golf series—set to kick off in Riyadh this Thursday—comes after considerable thought. With the backing of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf has captivated the interest of many younger golfers, including McKibbin.

He stated:

"I've watched this [LIV Golf] for the last couple of years since it started, and it's something that I've really liked to watch. It's something very different that probably appeals to more people my age."

By joining LIV Golf, McKibbin will have the opportunity to learn from some of the top talents in the sport, including major champions like Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. This decision places him alongside fellow Northerner Graeme McDowell, who made the switch in 2021.

However, the switch has its drawbacks; LIV Golf events do not offer world ranking points, which means McKibbin is likely to see a decline from his current 109th position. This might impact his visibility and participation in more conventional tournaments, leading to fewer opportunities on the PGA Tour.
