Australia Takes Charge on Day One of Sri Lanka Test

In a commanding display, Australia restricts Sri Lanka to 229-9 on the first day of the second Test in Galle.

On the opening day of the second Test in Galle, Australia showcased their prowess with a remarkable performance, leaving Sri Lanka grappling at 229-9 by day's end. The match saw veteran fast-bowler Mitchell Starc leading the charge with a splendid bowling display, claiming 3 wickets for just 37 runs.

The day began with off-spinner Nathan Lyon making an impactful entry, securing the first three wickets, including the prized scalp of Sri Lanka's opener, Dimuth Karunaratne. Playing in his 100th and final Test, Karunaratne was dismissed for 36 runs, much to the dismay of the home crowd.

Despite the early setbacks, Dinesh Chandimal exhibited resilience, crafting a battling 74 runs off 163 balls. His inning was abruptly ended when he was stumped by wicketkeeper Alex Carey off the bowling of left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, contributing to Sri Lanka's precarious position at 150-6.

A notable partnership emerged between Kusal Mendis and Ramesh Mendis, who rallied to add 65 runs for the seventh wicket. However, Mitchell Starc swiftly curtailed their hopes by having Ramesh caught behind for 28. Starc then struck again, dismissing Prabath Jayasuriya with his next delivery.

Kuhnemann added to the Australian tally by bowling Nishan Peiris just before stumps. As the day concluded, Kusal Mendis remained unbeaten on 59, with Australia looking to secure the final wicket early on the second day.

Having previously triumphed in the first Test by an astounding innings and 242 runs, Australia is in a prime position to seize control of the series. Compounding their strong showing, they welcomed 21-year-old all-rounder Cooper Connolly to the team, though he had a quiet debut, finishing with figures of 0-12 in just three overs. The stage is set for an exciting continuation of this gripping contest on day two.
