Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel: From Iowa State to Houston Texans - A Dynamic Wideout Duo

Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, former Iowa State teammates, are now making waves as rookie wide receivers for the Houston Texans, showcasing their unbreakable bond and determination to succeed in the NFL.

When Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel reflect on their time as wide receivers at Iowa State, they recall a unique gameday ritual that often decided who would make the big play: Rock, Paper, Scissors. During their tenure with the Cyclones (2023-2024), offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser would sometimes discuss potential deep plays with the duo on the sidelines. Since both wanted the opportunity to run the deeper route and potentially score a touchdown, they would settle the matter with the classic hand game.

"It was about who's gonna run the hold down route," Higgins told ESPN. "And who's gonna run the big play over the top."

Despite the outcome, the loser was always thrilled to see his teammate succeed, whether it was strolling into the end zone or making a big reception. This camaraderie has been a cornerstone of their relationship, helping them transition from college to the NFL after both were drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. Higgins was selected in the second round (No. 34 overall), while Noel was taken in the third round (No. 79).

A Rare Rookie Duo

The Houston Texans became the 12th team in the common draft era (since 1967) to select wideout teammates in the same draft. The last duo to achieve this was Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis, who were drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. Historically, only one pair of teammates—Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh of the Cincinnati Bengals—has gone on to earn Pro Bowl honors.

Higgins and Noel combined for 167 catches, 2,377 yards, and 17 touchdowns during their time at Iowa State, where they helped the Cyclones contend for a Big 12 title in 2024. Now, they are focused on contributing to the Texans' offense and becoming reliable targets for quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Training Camp and Preseason Highlights

Throughout training camp, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has praised the duo for their work ethic and inseparable bond. "They're always together, Jaylin and Jayden they're inseparable," Ryans said. "They're always working, doing extra things after practice. They're in constant communication, talking. Two really good young rookie wide receivers that we're excited to see what they become."

In the Texans' second preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Higgins made a highlight-reel diving catch for 14 yards, the longest play on the Texans' lone touchdown drive with the starters. Noel, watching from the sidelines, was ecstatic but immediately knew he had to step up his game.

"Great catch, something I've seen him do a lot of times, so it wasn't a surprise," Noel told ESPN. "But in my head, I'm like, Ah, I got to do something. I have to make up for it. But yeah, he made a great play. Those are the types of plays you want to see your teammate make. I was happy."

Looking Ahead to Week 1

As the Texans prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Higgins and Noel are navigating a crowded receiver room. Nico Collins holds one of the outside wideout spots, Christian Kirk is starting in the slot, and another former Iowa State standout, Xavier Hutchinson, is rotating with Higgins at the other outside spot. Noel primarily works from the slot but has also received reps on the outside.

While they don't plan on bringing their Rock, Paper, Scissors matches to NFL gamedays in their rookie year, Higgins and Noel are determined to make their mark on Sundays. "I like the two rookies, Jaylin and Jayden," Stroud said. "They've come in with a great mindset. They are really mature guys. Guys who love to work, consistently, here at the building or working with me in the offseason."
