Joyce-Butchers: A Rugby Love Story and the Journey to Parenthood

Jasmine and Alisha Joyce-Butchers share their journey to parenthood amidst their rugby careers, highlighting the challenges and joys of balancing family and sport.

Jasmine Joyce-Butchers and her wife Alisha have always dreamed of starting a family, but their rugby careers have often dictated the timing. The Wales rugby stars, who both play for Bristol Bears, announced their pregnancy earlier this year, a decision that has brought both joy and challenges.

A Dream Deferred

Jasmine, a 28-year-old flanker, expressed how long they've wanted a child. "We've wanted a baby for so long," she said. "But there is always something in rugby, always something that comes up." The couple, married in December 2023, decided not to wait any longer, despite the timing coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.

Sacrifices and Support

Alisha, who is carrying their child, will miss the World Cup, a significant sacrifice for her career. "She's been the brave one," Jasmine acknowledged. "It's very selfless of her to be the one to carry and miss out on the World Cup and part of her career." Alisha is the first professional player to benefit from the Welsh Rugby Union's new performance maternity programme, which has been highly praised.

Looking Ahead

The couple is eagerly anticipating the arrival of their son in November. Jasmine shared her excitement about the future, envisioning a time when their son could join them on the pitch. "It would be pretty cool if me and Alisha could still be playing," she said. "We'll have Joyce-Butchers on the back of our jerseys, that would be pretty special."

Personal Touches

While Alisha is back in Wales preparing the nursery, Jasmine has taken up crocheting during her time on tour. "I've done a dinosaur, it doesn't look like a dinosaur, and I've done a little bee, which looks like a bee," she joked. "It's very therapeutic."

Their story is a testament to the balance between professional sports and personal life, showcasing the resilience and love that defines the Joyce-Butchers family.
